I went to Camp Tagola from 1954 to l962, the summer before my freshman year at UPenn. Loved the whole schmeer. Got to sing the Ezio Pinza role in "South Pacific" (Sam Arbitol was the theater director in the mid-l950s), and was one of the two Peter Pans (the other, a girl Peter). Tad Gwritzman, a Brooklyn College tennis player, showed me how to serve the ball fast-as-hell. I loved every sport and was a better than average athlete. Snuck out of camp to candy store via a back trail. Shot two bulls-eyes my first time at the rifle range. Mucked around with Cynthia on that rifle range, at night,my first girlfriend. She was l5, I was l7. She wasn't a camper; her family summered on Sackett Lake. Saw "Psycho" in Monticello on my day off from my counselor job (1961, I think). Announced the night basketball games, including ones with college star Mickey Winograd (Duquesne). Nasty boat crash with Donny, my pal in summer l961. Cynthia bumped her head. Last year I discovered that a business colleague of mine, now retired, had dated the very same Cynthia. Was a color war lieutenant or general (I can't recall). Most of my Jewish education comes from the Friday and Saturday services -- white tee shirts the dress code. Loved to lay on the big rock on the boy's campus after we put the little kids to bed, and look up at the stars above the Catskills. In 1988, I wrote a piece resonating with summer camp in August, which was published in the Boston Globe and reprinted, in part, in l989 in Readers Digest. Freddy Pfennig. Ronnie Penn (great athlete). Stevie Stein (his mother always handed him a tongue sandwich through the window of the bus leaving for camp. (Ugh!). -- Robert (Bobby or Robbie or Rob) Brown, Belmont, Mass. July 31, 2011.

Was a camper from 1954-1962, and in the last two summers a counselor and an announcer who woke the boys camp with music. Played all sports not too badly. Sang leading roles in Peter Pan and South Pacific, other role in Oklahoma. Was a Lieutenant, I believe, in one of the color wars. Snuck out on occasion down by the archery range to candy store near Sacket Lake. Called Rob now; then, Bobby. Pretty good softball pitcher & hitter. Loved the experience from beginning to end.Remember great athletes like Ronnie Penn and college hoop player Mickey Winograd. Grew up at the camp. Learned my smattering of Hebrew there, more than anywhere else. First romances on the rifle range at night.

Went to TaGoLa from '69 to '73. Skipped one summer though. I had previously gone to Camp Brookwood on Dr. Jack Frankel's recommendation and naturally when he bought Tagola i switched over. Great times and fond memories!

Peace, Todd
